Caribbean House Evolution on Providenciales

Three Day Electronic Dance Music Festival in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Caribbean… House… Evolution?

Doesn’t it sound like a documentary about improvements in tropical home construction through the ages?

No, this increasingly popular event in the Turks and Caicos Islands is a three day festival held in and around Providencales that celebrates a type of electronic dance sound called house music. The full weekend line up includes both indoor and outdoor music festivities which raise money for the Edward Gartland Youth Centre and other charities. Villa del Mar is one of many local sponsors that make this well attended celebration possible.

What is Caribbean House Evolution?

What began a few years ago as a series of private parties has now expanded to a large scale event featuring international deejay talent and drawing hundreds of attendees from all over the world. The brainchild behind it all is John Tsavalas, a well known island promoter, restauranteur, and entertainer, who is also known as Johnny Legend. He’s passionate about the three day electronic dance music festival in the Turks and Caicos Islands and eagerly invites people to a unique and memorable experience.

“There are boat parties and house music and electronic dance music parties going on all over the place, but when it becomes something people haven’t seen before, it’s really hard to explain that,” says Johnny in the video here, “It’s an emotion I’m trying to get across to them. You need to come here because you’re going to feel this way.”

It’s three days of celebrating house music which, while it might not be the traditional Caribbean music, generates a soulful rhythm and vibe all of its own.

“Electronic music, personally I get lost in it much easier than I do with house music which I find more uplifting and more vintage, more vocal,” says Johnny, “It’s a soulful thing.”

The Celebration Timeline

Revolution
The musical celebrations begin with “Revolution” at the Sandbar on Friday July 22 at 10:00 pm. Local DJ Dallas Rhodes and DJ Franco Fabi from Montreal will be on deck. A native of New Zealand, Dallas played extensively in London before bringing house music to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Fabi from Montreal, Canada is well known on the international club scene and does a mix of progressive and electro house music.

Evolution
Finally on Sunday July 24 “Evolution” takes place at Little Water Cay. Along with DJ Peter Andrews and DJ Dallas, DJ Debbie Doe from Montreal contributes her own mix of funk, techno and African rhythms. Local charter boats like Atabeyra and visiting ships of all sizes gather in the clear Caicos waters, and participants enjoy an atmosphere of thumping baselines and cool rhythms.

“It becomes a place everybody can be themselves, like I feel on these islands,” says Johnny in this Travel Annex video. “Everybody can just be who they are for a couple of hours and in one weekend just dance, and have fun, and just let go.”
